KOMCirc

KOMCirc is a knowledge transfer initiative led by researchers at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research. The project supports raising awareness and the importance of circular practices and supports informed decision-making by transferring knowledge to companies, policymakers, sector organisations, educational institutions, educational institutions, and researchers

Researchers from Wageningen University & Research developed the Biomass Resource Valorisation Impact Analysis (BREVIA) tool, a science-based method to assess the resource use effcienty and greenhouse gas emissions of different biomass applications. By translating complex scientific insights into practical decision support, BREVIA tool contributes to more sustainable and resource-efficient use of organic materials and biological resources.

Why circularity matters

Transitioning towards a more circular economy leads to a more effective use of available resources. For biomass, higher circularity means that valuable components are retained, recovered, and reused wherever possible. Increasing circularity of biomass resources can:

  • Reduce the need for virgin feedstocks
  • Increase the value generated from biomass resources
  • Lower demand for land, water, nutrients, and energy
  • Reduce waste generation and environmental impacts

Together, these benefits contribute to a more sustainable and resilient bioeconomy. Understanding the circularity performance of different biomass applications helps organizations make well-informed decisions regarding biomass management and resource use.
