Researchers at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research have developed the Biomass Resource Valorisation Impact Analysis (BREVIA) tool (fka CAT). The BREVIA tool supports early-stage decision making on the most resource efficient and climate friendly use of biomass streams.

Based on the composition of a biomass resource, such as its protein, lipid, carbohydrate, fiber, and mineral content, the tool estimates resource use efficiency and climate impact for different valorisation pathways and applications, like livestock feed to human food, bioenergy, biopolymers, and microbial protein production. These estimations are based on known process conversion efficiencies and product yields. By comparing valorisation pathways and applications, stakeholders can identify the most suitable pathways for maximizing value while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The results enable a direct comparison of alternative uses of the same biomass stream. Because biomass resources differ in composition, the most sustainable and resource-efficient option can vary significantly between feedstocks. The tool therefore helps researchers, industry, and policymakers identify the most promising valorisation routes and support decision-making for a more circular bio-based economy.
